Although James Bourne from Busted has started a new band, the guys aren't worried about being branded 'Busted number two'. In fact Son of Dork are hoping to attract fans old and new with their rock music and achieve worldwide success on the back of their debut album, Welcome to Loserville. James exclusively revealed that one of his reasons for starting the new band was because he was on the rebound from Busted and was looking for a way to get over them. James, Chris, Danny, Steve and David speak to blissmag.co.uk's Eric Johnson about music, love... and of course, Busted.

So, aren’t you just a reincarnation of Busted?
David: “If we can emulate the success of Busted, then yeah it would be cool. But music wise, then not really, no. Because if you listen to the album it’s progressed a lot… and you’ve got us in the band as well.”
Steve: “We’ve got a drummer and he’s awesome.”
David: “Our producer was a rock producer so it’s going to sound more rock. We know people may brand it ‘Busted number 2’, but it’s going to have an obvious sound like Busted because James went straight out from them.”

Are you trying to move away from Busted?
James: “Not really. I’d like it if Busted fans liked it – I think the Busted fans are going to like it and I think if other people listen to it with an open mind then they’re going to like it to.”

Describe Son of Dork in six words
All: “Energetic, fun, livid, subsequencial, implement and obtainable.”

How long did it take from the split to decide you’re going to start another band?
James: “Two weeks! It was straight away. I was like ‘well I’m not just going to stop now.’ When Busted ended, I just started doing another band. I didn’t know Busted was going to end. So as soon as it ended I was just like ‘well, I can’t just end like that’.

So you were quite gutted but you got over it quite quickly?
James: “You can’t just let that stop you from doing what you like. It ended, and I said ‘well I’m just going to do another band’ – I’m still the same person in Busted who likes doing music so I’m just going to continue doing music. So I put another band together just like I put Busted together and got a rockier producer.”

There’s a mix of ages in the band. How well are you all getting on?
Steve: “We all hate each other too now to care!”
David: “It’s like man and wife after 60 years!”
Danny: “We all get on really well because we’ve all got the same interests. We can be quite immature sometimes but we all enjoy the same things and have a laugh.

Would you describe SOD as ‘pop’ or ‘rock’?
David, Danny, Chris: “Pop!”
James: “How can you be pop if you haven’t sold any records yet?! Pop isn’t a genre you can be in when you’re starting out. Pop is a category you’re put in when you’ve sold records.”
Steve: “The Beatles were pop because they sold millions of records. We’d like to be pop.”

Do you want to inherit the girl fans from Busted?
Danny: “Of course man.”
Chris: “Without a doubt. There’s actually quite a lot of guys though about 15/16 who are getting into it.”
James: “We’ve get fan mail from every single country in the world… Brazil, America, Japan, France, Australia, New Zealand…”

So how are you all on the laydee front anyway?
David: “I’m desperate and I take what I can get!”
Steve: “Danny and Dave are the ones who can’t get anyone yet. Dave doesn’t have any girlfriends – he’s like really selective of whom he goes out with! Danny is the most careful and choosy about whom he goes out with.”
David: “Danny in fact hasn’t been with a woman for years!”

Do you think it’s going to be easier to meet girls with your acquired fame?
James: “Speaking from three years experience, yes it definitely does. But it’s not necessarily a good thing, because you meet the wrong kind. But the thing is, there is definitely a line. Obviously, people come over that are the wrong kind of people you want to talk to – they just want to get with you to print it in the Sun. But there’s the other ones who just want to talk to you because of who you are and at the end of the day, you are who you are. Isn’t that why you like anyone? It’s the same reason why you would want to go out with someone else, you like them for who they are. People say ‘I just want to go out with you because you’re in Son of Dork’ well that’s a good enough reason.

What do you think of Fearne Cotton?!
Chris: “Fearne is a good friend of ours. We went out with her last Thursday and Friday and we’re going out with her again this Saturday. It’s always good to know Fearne because she’s hot!”

What are you killer tips for starting up a band?
Chris: “Learn how to write good songs - don’t give up if you write bad songs. The Beatles said they wrote 200 really bad songs before they wrote their first good one.”
James: “Write your own songs – don’t release songs of other people’s. If you’re starting band just to be famous, then it’s the wrong reason. You got to do it because you really like your music.”
Danny: “Don’t think it’ll come in 10 minutes because it’s a lot of hard work.”
Steve: “Make sure you like your band and you all like each other.”
James: “You’re not going to write your best song the first time you try and write songs, so just keep trying. All the kids in their bedroom are the people with a real chance.”
